Sports betting searches follow the fixture list. Interest in a race, match or tournament builds in the weeks before it starts, peaks on the day and falls away soon after. The problem for sportsbooks and betting affiliates is that Google rarely ranks a brand-new page in time to catch that peak.
New pages need time to be crawled, indexed, linked to and trusted. Content published in the week of an event is usually too late. The brands that win big-event traffic are the ones that planned months in advance. This guide explains how to do that, with a month-by-month calendar of the key moments in the UK betting year.
Why timing matters so much in sportsbook SEO
Three things take time, and none of them can be rushed in the week of an event:
- Indexing. Google has to find and process a new page before it can rank it.
- Authority. Links, internal links and engagement build up over weeks and months.
- Trust. Pages with a history of ranking for a topic tend to keep ranking for it.
That is why the most valuable sportsbook pages are evergreen hubs that are updated every year, rather than new pages created for each event.
Build evergreen hubs, not one-off pages
Use a permanent URL for each competition and recurring event, and update the content each season. For example, a page at /horse-racing/cheltenham-festival/ that is refreshed every year keeps all of its links and ranking history. A new page at /cheltenham-festival-2027/ starts again from zero.
A simple structure works well:
- Sport hubs, such as football, horse racing, tennis and golf.
- Competition and event hubs, such as the Premier League, the Grand National or Wimbledon.
- Fixture and race pages, which sit under their hub and link back to it.
The hubs collect authority over time and pass it to the short-lived fixture pages beneath them.

What to do with expired fixture pages
A busy sportsbook can create thousands of fixture and race pages a year. Left alone, they become thin, out-of-date pages that waste Google’s crawl budget. Decide on a rule for them, for example:
- Redirect expired fixture pages to their competition hub, unless they have earned links or still get traffic.
- Keep results pages that people still search for, such as past winners of a famous race.
- Make sure expired pages are removed from your XML sitemap.
Use digital PR around the big moments
Journalists cover major sporting events heavily, and they are always looking for fresh angles. A data-led story pitched a few weeks before an event can earn coverage and links that strengthen your hubs for years. Every campaign should follow the gambling advertising rules, including never appealing to under-18s. Find out more about our iGaming digital PR.
